About Stacy

Stacy has been passionately teaching the English language communicatively to learners of all ages since 2004. She holds several English Language Teaching Certifications and has helped thousands of students of all ages master their English communication skills in South Korea, Japan, Chile, and Costa Rica how to communicate effectively in English. Stacy also has experience teaching in Canada's LINC program (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) as well as with her privately-tutored students.

After relocating to Vernon, Stacy became aware of the pressing need in the community for literacy therapy, having learned of the prevalence of dyslexia and other learning disorders affecting young students struggling and falling grades behind with their reading and writing skills in the public education system.

Aware that she could help make a difference in the lives of these children and their families, Stacy recertified in the Orton-Gillingham Approach to remedial therapy addressing dyslexia (difficulty reading) and dysgraphia (difficulty writing), among other related conditions, thus paving the way to a better future for those in the community with these and other similar challenges.

About the Orton-Gillingham Therapeutic

Approach

Orton-Gillingham is a proven and highly researched and evidence-based approach for the remedial therapy of dyslexia and other similar language-learning challenges. Orton-Gillingham is the oldest and most recognized therapeutic approach, which allows for personalized adjustments to every individual student's needs and concrete results. It is a one-to-one or small-group approach, which allows for quick, direct, and permanent progress in all areas of literacy.

Multisensory:  all learning pathways are used (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile)

Phonetic & Alphabetic:  the logical relationship between the sounds and symbols of the English language and the rules that must be followed

Synthetic & Analytic:  the learning of phonemes (sound units) and their matching graphemes (written symbols); breaking down words into parts through decoding

Structured:  the presentation of materials in an organized manner connecting new and previously taught information

Sequential:  moving from simple to more complex concepts until all skills are mastered

Repetitive:  repetition promotes word recognition as well as reading and writing fluency and comprehension

Cumulative:  new essential building blocks are introduced as previously taught skills are mastered.

Cognitive:  the learning and understanding of the rules of the English language and how they are applied in reading, writing, and spelling.

Diagnostic:  continuous progress monitoring of each student's performance to evaluate further areas of need

Prescriptive:  using diagnostic information to drive future lessons and targeting the learner's areas of need

Research has shown that the Orton-Gillingham Approach is effective due to these ten essential elements that are included in every one of Stacy's lessons:
